MI/X, frankly, sucks. It's way too slow. I applaud MicroImages for making it
freely available but it's terrible -- even on my 7300+G3/500/1MB!

I actually use MacX 1.2 on my 7300, which has been widely (and truly) panned
as buggy on PCI systems. However, I've found through tinkering with MacsBug
that the error is due to a non-fatal F-Trap. Long and short of it is, if you
install MacsBug, then whenever MacX bugs out, just type G <return>, and the
program continues normally. Annoying but functional. One of these days, I'll
just patch the code (I have some idea which CODE resource the error is in).

MacX 1.2 came on the A/UX CDs which I have, and amazingly, the MacTCP MacX
Connection Tool (7.0.1 era!) works 100% with OS 9.1 OpenTransport. If you
can find 1.5 or 2.0, they're patched for PCI Power Macs and work fine, but
1.2 is much easier to find if you can tolerate the annoyance. The other
advantage is that it will even run in System 6, and it's very fast on PPC.

One other bug about MacX 1.2 (both on 68k and PCI) is that the Backing Store
doesn't work right for some programs. xsol (Solitaire) on my Solbourne
S4100/36 doesn't repaint cards properly with Backing Store enabled -- it
has to be totally off. This really makes performance suck on slower systems,
but if you're just using xterm, Backing Store doesn't seem to be buggy for
that. Haven't tried xlander yet. :-) This may be fixed in later versions.
