folk,

i have recently installed debian. using bash has improved my typing
skills. lynx is fast fast fast, but i am determined to step away from
the command line and into X.

however, two weeks of reading manuals, howtos, search engines (and
cursing various alleged documentations) and no go. i suspect that X
(and XFree86) don't know how to deal with the fact that my monitor is
not exactly connected to a video card.
i have tried
#startx
#Xvfb :5 -screen 0 1024x768x8 &
#X -config
#xf86cfg
and various other incantations. all result in my screen flashing four
times and returning me to bash with "fatal server error: screen not found".

anyone willing to direct me?

system particulars: 7600/120 with g3sonnet400, using 4MB builtin VRAM,
connected to a Supermac STD9782 via a griffin macSense adapter, which
(in theory at least) conceals all details of the monitor and just gives
the machine what it says it wants.
