I use Yellowdog, but perhaps I can help.  First, have you tried
dexconf?  What seems to be happening is that the frame buffer (which
I'm pretty sure handles the text modes too) isn't allowing any of the
settings available in the X configuration file (probably
/etc/X11/XF86Config).  You might try fbset or the molvconfig
utilities.  You may also have Xconfigurator or Xautoconfig, or you may
be able to install them- perhaps via alien.   

I've had the easiest time using Yellow Dog Linux; it's probably the
easiest Linux I've installed on any architecture.
