Todd, I would submit that the slow hard drive is contributing more to the "slowness" of the system than the Linux distro you used. (Unless you used MkLinux, which _is_ slow.) I get semi-tolerable interactive performance (with X even) running NetBSD on an SE/30 with 68 MB. (Or maybe I'm just more patient than most.) Of course I wasn't actually doing a whole lot, but still.
It also depends what you're using the system for. Is this a server, or a workstation? If a workstation, it might be too low-end to run KDE or Gnome. Go with a simpler window manager like WindowMaker, and if that's still too slow use IceWM or Blackbox. If it's a server, turn off unnecessary services. I ran YDL 2.1 on a PCP 210 (128 MB) for awhile, and the performance seemed very acceptable. I primarily used IceWM and Blackbox. I run YDL 2.3 on my beige G3/300 (576 MB) now, and while KDE is responsive enough to use, I find Blackbox is far more responsive, and I may stay with it. I skimmed the notes for installing NetBSD on PPC machines...ugh. It seems Linux has it much easier. (On the 68k Macs though, NetBSD is easily installed.) OS X is going to seem slower than any Linux you could try. I would advise against it, unless you really need something it has that Linux doesn't, and don't have a more modern machine to use it on. I advise staying with a Linux. As to which distro, I don't think it matters much. If you have experience with one on the x86 side, use the PPC version. If you have friends that have experience with one, use that so you can ask them questions. If you're adventurous, use whatever you want. :) Tim -- Tim Larson <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< OL 4-131-2 Info.
