Yup, console is your friend, especially with dt installed.  Or maybe you don't need 
that in Linux.  The only reason X is installed is "just because".  I'm surprised that 
you find Blackbox too heavy, though.  IceWM on the SE/30 seemed acceptable though 
admittedly I wasn't really doing much that would compete for the processor.
