IMO, this depends very much on what window manager (if any)
you use. On a 6100/66, a heavyweight desktop system like KDE
will make you scream with frustration, and that's before you
try to do anything with it. The same computer running AfterStep
or something similar (fvwm2, WindowMaker) runs fast enough
for most needs except for processor-intensive things like
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and even works well using VNC to provide a remote
desktop. Turn off the graphics and it's a fine departmental
server for file sharing & web pages.
The two keys to using Linux on older hardware is to max out
the RAM and run a lightweight window manager. If you can use
lighter applications (Dillo for web browsing, LyX or even
Siag Office for word processing, Ace of Penguins for card
games), you might find yourself wondering what all the fuss
over new hardware is about. :-) (yes, I'm exaggerating a
little)
