Howdy... I'm trying to use a Quadra 840AV for a NetBSD box (wheeee, speed!) but am having problems even getting it to boot correctly at the moment. I think it might be some sort of SCSI problem, but am not sure. I've never really had a problem of this type before.
Some SCSI info up front: My CD is id 3 and the first device on the chain, the Zip is id 5 and would be 2nd on the chain (disconnected ATM), and there are two more positions on the internal chain I want to use for hard drives. Booting from any of about 6 different drives (ranging from 250MB to 2GB) has failed. Not sure what OS is installed on most of them, but most were pulled from machines of that era, so the Q840 ought to recognize it at least. All I get to is the gray screen with frozen mouse pointer. I try to boot from a system (7.6) CD, but that locks at the same place _if a hard drive is attached_. Without a HD, I can boot the CD. Funny thing is, even this will only work if the CD drive is terminated, and it's the 1st device on the chain. Correction, I was able to boot from CD with the 2GB drive attached; that drive was actually used for a BSD experiment on a different machine and does not have a bootable Mac partition. I've tried drives set to id 0 and 1, drives with the terminator jumper set and not set, and others that didn't have a jumper for term. I don't think the SCSI bus is hosed, because the CD works. But if there is some other SCSI problem, I haven't been able to identify it yet. And it might not be SCSI at all, for all I know! Any ideas appreciated. Hopefully I'm not too OT for this list.
