I was wondering how I would go about setting up a bootable striped RAID under Linux, and if there was any way that could also be bootable from OS 9 and/or X with XPostFacto.
Linux and BSD support a completely different set of filesystems than either Mac OS. The only filesystem supported well by all the OS's you mention is FAT. I wouldn't want to build a RAID array and then format it as FAT, ick.
Plus I don't think any of those OS's will boot from FAT, they only support mounting a FAT volume once booted.
So the short answer, AFAIK, is no.
If not, I could also install a small SCSI disk for Mac booting - if I do that, would it be possible to access the RAID volumes?
On Old World Macs, Linux installs usually _require_ the system boot into Mac OS, then BootX swings the boot process over to Linux. That means you _have_ to have a working bootable Mac OS on some disk. I can't say for the BSD flavors.
I would also appreciate any tips on video cards, and dual processor support. I'll be using a Radeon during set-up, but that will eventually go to another machine. I've heard that it is possible to use a PC video card with *nix drivers. If so, how do I build the drivers into my PPC *nix?
I just read on the Fedora development list that good support for the newer Radeon cards is lacking. That doesn't mean a Radeon won't work, it means the drivers won't take advantage of all the speed the card is capable of. You might get better actual performance from a card that is better supported. Better support for Radeon cards is expected in XFree 4.4.0, which is still in beta. Even then, there will still be a lot of potential performance left on the table.
Of course, I never use X Windows on any of my Linux machines, so I don't really care about graphics performance.
