Perhaps it was cheaper to tie the microcontroller into the OS? As
for "proprietary" and "increasingly monopolistic", it seems to me
that Apple has always been tight on documentation. In a similar
vein, the Wintel world seems to be becoming increasingly monopolistic.
For instance, the chief problem with running Linux on my PowerBook
is the nVidia video chip and wireless adapter (which I don't actually
have). Both of these chips are used in PCs as well, so where is
the difference?

Also, the amount of support depends upon the OS. Of course, Mac
OS X provides the best support for the hardware because Apple knows
exactly what is inside this machine. Linux is a close follower,
with power management being the big problem (again, it is a problem
on most of the PC laptops I've seen), and OpenBSD and NetBSD lag
behind. Granted, I still prefer OpenBSD and NetBSD because the
don't suffer from the same amount of code bloat.

Byron.
