On my Panther system, xinetd is set to run in compat mode, so this line is
in inetd.conf in both places. You can find out what you're running and in
what mode with something like ps auxww | grep inetd and examining the output.
Make sure you throw a SIGHUP at (x)inetd when you're done.
forgot to mention, I'm using Panther.
