1.) You will need to still have a copy of MacOS 9.x to kick the bootloader
over. Yours is an "Old World" Mac and you will need to set up an extension as
part of your extension set to boot into Linux.

2.) I strongly suggest Debian Sarge over Yellow Dog. Yellow Dog is right now
in a development lull as opposed to Debian and Yellow Dog's non-commercial
counterpart Fedora PPC. But Debian Sarge has the advantage of dpackage and
apt-get. Want to keep a Debian system up to date?

Type this in a console:

$ su
# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade

There's no step four! There's no step four! Everything else is done
automagickally.

As far as your window manager goes, you might want to look at IceWM or XFce.
XFce is especially nice if you want a Mac OS X-like experience. You will
want the libraries for GNOME and KDE but unfortunately with your specs you
will be disappointed if you go that route for your desktop environment.

Hopefully this will be of help to you.
