I'm new to this list, after a long time on the supermacs list. I'm curious about running Linux on my c600, and I have some (very) basic questions.
Here's my setup: c600 144MB RAM Sonnet G3 L2 cache upgrade ixMicro Ultimate Rez video card generic USB & Firewire cards 60 GB IDE drive Ricoh SCSI CD-RW USR external serial modem comm slot 2 ethernet card (seldom used) I'm looking at Yellow Dog Linux, and it appears that YDL 3.0 may support my machine. I'd like to try installing Linux and seeing if I can start using Thunderbird/Firefox or some other open source apps. My main OS would still be Mac OS 8.6 or 9.1. Has anyone gotten Linux to run successfully on this setup? What pitfalls should I avoid? I've read that the L2 G3 cards may not work under Linux. Is that true, or is there a way around it? The speed hit if I can't run the G3 may be a showstopper for me. How much disk space should I format as Linux? Is a swap partition necesary and where should it be on the disk? Is there a better window manager (right term?) than the stock YDL one for speed and compatibility? Are there other issues to watch out for? I know this is ancient hardware, but I'm interested ingiving it a try. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.
