Well, I figured out the solution for myself (at last):
All you have to do is to put this line before starting the MaxDB Programs:

export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

You need this environment variable both for the database itself and for the 
wahttp server. It's possible to cold start the database without this 
directive but it will crash when you try to make it online.

Also beware: The SuSE 9.1 SAPDB-rpm's that are distributed with the SuSE 
release are broken - the above directive does not solve the problem.
