Not a stupid question. No, it is not the same volume.
I notice that a file was created in the folder I specified for the first
instance, but no file was created in the path I specified for the second
instance and the return code of 2 is the operating system code meaning
"could not open the file because no file exists". I don't know which part of
the creation process is supposed to create (and init) the file, but that
appears to be the part that failed. I also tried initializing an instance
after creating it, but with the same result.

  ^^^^^^^^^^
Maybe stupid question, is this the data volume of your first instance? You
can't share them among instances.
