That's a documentation problem then. It looks to me like it should
be documented in Maypole::Manual::Workflow, but isn't. In
Mapypole.pm, the entirety of the documentation is:
handler_guts
This is the core of maypole. You don't want to know.
A talkthrough of handler_guts would be useful.
I'll probably get some time to look at this stuff around the end of
this month.
