If you are trying to detect when a USB storage device is plugged in then I
would just use MacUSBDeviceMBS and WinUSBDeviceMBS to notify you that
"something" has been plugged in (or unplugged) then scan for "new" storage
devices independent of MacUSBDeviceMBS/WinUSBDeviceMBS using the "Volume"
and "VolumeCount" methods.

Keep an array of all storage locations on launch and when something is
plugged in compare that list to the new list and see what may have been
added or removed.
