We have a bit of experience with this bewildering delema. One neat thing we
did is to have our database keep a record of the off line original high
res files. As well as some routine to manage the low res on-line images.
Basically our system tell the user were the original image file lives when
they look at a catalog record. It does this for over 100,000 high res
image. Our nameimg schema helps as well, the file name is based on the
catalog name. This system works very well for us, however I know that some
people are using the CIMI Dublin Core for a finding aid to  digitized
images.
