Sorry, that wasn't what I meant.  To explain further:

"#" denotes "Coloured" text.
ie.  #This is coloured#

"/" denotes "Italic" text.
ie. /This is in italics/

When editing messages with MD2/TextInput, entering a "#" shows the following
text in reversed/coloured format, but when you read messages with
MD2/TextInput, the text enclosed in the hashes does not show up in the
correct format (in fact, it just displays as plain text, with the hashes
included).  With italics, you can edit a message with a "/" in it, and the
following text won't be shown in the reversed/coloured format.  However,
when reading the message in MD2, the text will display in italics.
