Yes, it's pretty much that simple. As long as your deck has an optical out
and in (check carefully because many low end decks from some manufacturers
don't have both) and your soundcard has optical in and out, then you can
transfer both ways to your minidisc. Even with the lowest end machines that
have that capability, the quality is VERY good. You might gain a little bit
with a higher end machine and soundcard, but unless your requirements are
very stringent and you have golden ears, you probably wouldn't notice the
difference. I use a Sharp MD-R2 deck that I bought from Minidisco for $150,
and a Hoontech Yamaha XG soundcard that I bought for around $70, and the
results are great. You can use coax as well, but personally I prefer optical
because there is no electrical connection. That means a surge in one piece
of equipment doesn't take out everything else that is connected.

You can buy an optical cable a LOT cheaper than the ones you will find in
the department store from Sound Professionals. I bought 5 of them (one is 10
meters) and they work great.

Subject: MD: What is the best soundcard/optical cable/deck md for
transfering to PC ?
Importance: High

It'a question I've more or less asked in the past ; Actually my concern is
having best transfer quality as I need to transfer street and countryside
recordings from MD to PC... If any combination provides same quality, i can
buy any deck MD + optical cable in my dept store, and i will buy any
soundcard with optical in from the net..but is it so simple ?
Thanks a lot,
Salutations
