I've never seen a recorder that can protect tracks either, but various
manuals I've read have referred to protected tracks, saying that (if one
wants to delete one on the machine under discussion) one has to confirm one
extra time, or that one has to use a machine that can protect tracks to
unprotect the track first.  Other manuals never mention protected tracks at
all, implying that they ignore the feature.  Of course, I've never had a
recordable disc with a protected track to experiment with.

So let's put it this way:

bit 7: 0 = write-protected track, 1 = writable track

It should be pointed out that opening the write-protect on the disc will not
make this bit read 0.
