Right. I hope I didn't overstep here. The cover letter and the
petition are two separate items (the petition statement and the 300
accompanying signatures are all stapled together as one (thick!)
document). The signatures endorse the petition, which is just to get
rid of END SEARCH. If Sony agrees with this they will naturally be
asking, "What then?", and it is this point I am addressing (with my
opinion) in the cover letter.

This did occur to me, but Sharp portables have always started in REC
PAUSE mode, and I don't hear any carping about that feature from Sharp
users (but now's your chance!).

True, but getting modern Sony's (such as the MZ-R90) to start in REC
PAUSE mode is, for all but the most nimble, a two handed operation
(and doing it on the MZ-R90 with one hand, while holding the unit, is
nearly impossible).
I think recording is logically two steps:
1) Prep (check source connectivity, levels, recording mode, time remaining)
2) Start (hit one button, when ready)
How many people would want to start valuable recordings without doing
the Prep step? The people making the home decks realize this, and so
do the Sharp portable designers.

I apologize. To me, the petition is to remove END SEARCH, the cover
letter (fairly) incorporates my opinion. Perhaps I should have made
that distinction clearer.

But be careful, user assumptions about which way this non-volatile
switch is set are more likely to be a cause of recording failure than
simply learning that "Post 2000, Sony Portables and Decks Operate
Identically" (and yes, why *not* have TIME MACHINE recording available
on portables?).
