Rick suggested,
| How about reading both left and right tracks into a computer and making
| them monaural by hand (using Matlab or some waveform editor), just to
| eliminate any possible problems with this allegedly mono CD signal?
1. That means getting the computer involved, which I prefer to avoid.
2. As I have no digital output on my soundcard, the only way to get the mono
computer file to MD by digital transfer is to write it to CDRW and then
copy it from CDRW to MD, which puts me into the same place as if I hadn't
used the computer.
3. If one does have a soundcard with digital output, I'm not sure it would
make any difference. S/PDIF signals are always stereo and represent mono
by carrying two identical channels, so unless the MD recorder behaves dif-
ferently based on the source medium ID in the subcode, it's going to do
the same thing making a mono recording of an S/PDIF signal from a sound-
card as it does with one from a CD player. As for testing the "unless"
clause, see #2: someone else will have to do it.
Damn, but I want to get that JB940.
