Do you hear audio out the Sharp's headphone jack? I am fairly sure the
"Can't Record" message means that it can't record due to SCMS
limitations.

Try running it into your MXD-D3.

The real question is probably: Why is your Denon CD player putting out
a CopyProtected signal?
