Kaos Effect asked,

| Hi! I do not know if it has been mentioned in this
| group, but I was looking through the magazine,
| "Gear", and I noticed an awesome MD deck. I won't
| describe the ad, for I do not know if this deck has
| been mentioned before, BUT, it records 4X as fast as
| a regular disc!!! That's awesome!

It can't record from an analog or S/PDIF source at quadruple speed; the
only thing possible at such a speedup is to copy already ATRACked data
from another MD.

Denon's professional duplicators, the duplication feature of Sony's MD-B5,
and the track move function on the Sony MDS-W1, all of which work on ATRACked
data without decompressing and recompressing them, can transfer ATRACked data
at 4x for stereo or 8x for mono, simply because the data are compressed to
that size already, and the same bit transfer rate gets through the audio in
1/4 or 1/8 the time.

But you can't copy a four-minute CD track to MD in one minute on any existing
unit, nor will you ever find one that can record a one-hour radio program to
MD in fifteen minutes.

[Can you imagine being able to record a two-hour class lecture in half an
hour and then being free to do something else for ninety minutes? We can
 dream.]
