If it still under guarantee, I wouldn't hesitate to take it back to the shop
and ask them to repair it.

Don't tell them you dropped it, just make up a little white lie like you
were using it on a train and the disc wouldn't come out, when you picked
it up a screw dropped to the floor and rolled down a ventilation slot.
You could also say "I guess I must have had a screw loose" if they have
a sense of humour :-)  I know I would if I was in a silly mood.

While you're on you could also ask if they would instead exchange it
for a better unit, eg any Sony from the MZ-R2 onwards <Gaz hides
in a corner, curls up into a ball and hope no-one kicks him :->
