Trace, I read on some website that the best headphones for a portable are
the Grado SR60. Rather, they're the best that do not require an
amplifier. Based on that advice, I bought some, and I love them. They
sound fantastic with my portable, and give a nice, well defined bass.
They sound great with my home deck, too, so I highly recommend them. I
do admit, though, that they're pretty big and clunky looking, which could
be a problem if you're looking for something small and sleek for your
portable.
