There is one simple fact that applies in almost all countries in the world
where music is sold, and that is this: You are not allowed to make a copy
for use by the person who does not own the *original* commercial release.

If you copy a CD for a friend, then that is illegal. If you make a copy of a
disc borrowed from a friend then that is also illegal. If you record a
concert onto a disc by sneaking a recorder in your pocket, that is illegal.
You need PERMISSION from the COPYRIGHT OWNER to make a copy of the recording
or to record a concert. Just because the resources are not available to deal
with all the illegal copying does not mean it ceases to be illegal.

Hope this clears it up for a few people.
