My guess is that while MDs and CDs don't "transmit" any signal, they
probably do output a lot of RF interference. I can't work out at which stage
this occurs though. The major problem comes from any oscillator that has
harmonics in the frequency ranges that are used by the plane's control
systems - you'll probably notice that the bans are only on Airbusses. I
would also suspect that these harmonics probably interfere with some of the
short range naavigation equipmemt, hence the ban on electrical device use at
take-off and landing (though that could just be so you don't brain someone
with your laptop iff there's a hard landing...)
