| Does anyone know if leaving the Sharp 702 portable MD permanently
| connected to 5v will do it any damage? When the charge indicator goes
| out, does it go into trickle charge mode?

No. Li-Ion cells do not trickle charge. They retain their charge, unlike
NiCd and NiMH cells, so trickle charging is unnecessary, and will in fact
damage them.

| The reason I ask is that I have wired it into my car and often leave it
| in there for several days in a row.

Heat is more a problem than anything else in that situation.

| I understand that you should always run the battery down fully before
| charging to maintain battery capacity.

That is a myth. Frequent overdischarge of all forms of rechargeable
batteries -- NiCd, NiMH, Li-Ion -- will cause permenent damage to the
cells. NiCd cells may be overdischarged occasionally. NiMH cells should
not be overdischarged; they prefer shallow discharge/charge cycles. Li-Ion
cells should never be overdischarged if at all possible, unless a device
made specifically for that purpose is used.
