Sony could have described the volume setting some other way. For example, my
Aiwa AM-F70 has volume settings from 0 to 20; turning EarGuard (synonym for
AVLS) on prevents it from going higher than 12. If something required the
highest setting allowed by EarGuard, the manual could say "set the volume at
12."

I haven't seen numeric indicators for the volume steps on Sony MD portables,
but some level could blink with a name, or the instructions for hookup to a
shelf system could say how many bars to count, or there could be an arrow on
the case at the LCD's border, or something like that, not dependent on AVLS
for its reference frame.
