Hi All,

Let's try again (the mailer sent the last message as a MIME attachment
which got ditched somewhere along the line).

I am an audio professional who sings in a choir
(www.cambridgechorale.org.uk) and records their concerts for fun. Up until
now I've dragged around over 50lbs of stuff to do this, and I'm getting
towards having had enough of that. It's certainly not easy to take anywhere
by air.

I'm looking for an MD recorder that I can use on its own for a quick
point'n'shoot, or as a backup to the DAT or CDR for more important work.
For the former, I need decent mic amps and preferably phantom power; for
the latter I need a digital input. I also need a digital output for
transfer to CDR or my editor.

My choices, as I can see, are:

1. buy a consumer portable recorder, and a reasonable "home" deck. I can
then take the portable plus my existing mic amps to the location to
record. The home deck then has the digital in and out for interfacing with
the editor. I'd have to be careful that my choice of portable has a digital
in, and adequate facilities for disabling any AGC, setting the record level
and so on.

2. an alternative would be a pro machine such as the HHB Portadisc MDP500
or Marantz PMD650. These are considerably more expensive (especially the
HHB), but offer an all-in-one solution, running from batteries if required.

I currently favour the HHB, as on paper it seems worth the money to me.
However, I have heard various (unconfirmed) rumours that it doesn't deliver
what the brochure says it does. Does anyone have any thoughts, or direct
experience of the HHB ? I am also interested in what can be done over the
USB port on the HHB; I know you can transfer audio, but can you title
discs/tracks, transfer the TOC and so on? If so that would make the basis
of an excellent disc cataloguing system.

Regards,

Christopher Hicks
