When I first got into MD back in May of '93, one of my first thoughts
was: "Wow! Wouldn't it be nice if they invented a video recording
format just like this?" Well, folks, they did!

I just got my Panasonic DMR-E10 DVD recorder on Thursday, and I was
surprised at how the recording capabilities and functions remind me of
MD. Supposedly a DVD-RAM disc can be recorded and re-recorded 100,000
times. The disc resides in a caddy. You can insert track marks to make
access to different sections of the disc much easier. You can erase
designated program material and regain recording time. You can make
multiple play lists. There are three recording speeds. As in the early
days of MD, the media prices are quite high ($30 per disc). I am sure
there are other parallels between DVD-RAM and MD, but these are just
my initial impressions.

J&R Music World has discounted the price to $1,200, which is as low as
I've found it anywhere. I realize that to buy now is something of a
risk given that there's a format war going on (DVD-RM vs. DVD-RW vs.
DVD+RW), but I don't regret my decision at all. This is definitely the
video equivalent of MD!
