I bought a broken Sharp MD-MS702 for $15 shipped. Any disc I put in was returning "TOC ERRORa" on the display. I opened it up and applied power to it and discovered the optical sled wasn't moving. It was in the outermost position. So I disassembled it, spun the tiny little sled motor until the sled was at the parked innermost position, and hooked power up to it again. Voila! That fixed it! I haven't tried it out completely since I don't have a proper wall wart for it, but I played through a few tracks, skipped through a whole disc, etc. It seems to work fine. I hypothesize that the cause of the problem was that the worm gear had jammed causing the sled to stay stuck in the outermost position.
