KUALA LUMPUR: The University of Technology Petronas (UTP) was named one of the nine winners of the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture last night. UTP clinched the award for its ultra-modern structure that was rich in subtle traditional textile designs. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the Aga Khan, the 49th Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, presented the award at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall. The award honours architectural excellence in Muslim-dominated societies. A total of 343 structures were nominated and, of these, 27 were short-listed before the final nine were selected. The other eight winners are: The Samir Kassir Square in Beirut, the rehabilitation work on the city of Shibam Wadi Hadhramaut in Yemen, the Central Market project in Burkina Faso, the restoration of the Amiriya Complex in Yemen, the Moulmein Rise Residential Tower in Singapore, the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the rehabilitation of the Walled City of Nicosia in Cyprus and the School in Rudrapur project in Dinajpur, Bangladesh. Abdullah, in his address, said everyone had a responsibility to create awareness among town planners, developers, architects, administrators and final users to discourage the built environment from dominating space at the cost of the natural environment. "Man-made structures and buildings must be built to harmonise with and complement the environment, besides meeting the needs of their end-users." Above all, he said, planners and builders must take care not to encroach upon the cultural and spiritual sensitivities of the people. The Aga Khan said that architecture was an inherently pluralistic enterprise, "which honours diversity, including diversity within and among Islamic communities". "At its best, architecture will help people to come together across old divides rather than reinforce those divides and isolating one group from another," he said.
