OTTAWA (CP) - New figures suggest Canadians are tuning in to satellite
television in greater numbers at the expense of cable TV.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission's latest
report shows satellite TV providers expanding their market share while
cable TV subscriptions were stagnant and declining. Last year, the number
of Canadian households with satellite TV rose to nearly 2.5 million, an
increase of 170,000, or eight per cent.

Although cable TV providers still hold a dominant share of the Canadian
market, the number of households with cable TV last year fell by about
24,000 to 6.61 million.

Cable revenues were up to $4.47 billion, but profits before taxes and
interest fell slightly from 2004.

The gains by satellite providers pushed total revenues for companies like
Bell Expressvu to $1.5 billion, and meant the sector recorded a profit
before taxes and interest for the first time.
