I really don't like the VisualEditor yet, spec. because is quite lazy and
once and a while I had lost all my editing due to freezing ouch! I'm using
that User Preferences feature and is working ok, but it seems to freeze a
bit sometimes.
Oh well, maybe there is some ide we can configure the syntax for wiki text.

One of the reasons is that it is rather inefficient. Not more than
VisualEditor, but still. There definitely would be people who would
want to disable it. It's also imperfect. It makes mistakes in highly
complex pages.
Something similar was in in the works for WikiEditor some 4 years ago,
but it was judged that it would be better to not continue investing
WMF resources into it.
I think it could probably be made into an extensions quite easily. If
you can find a volunteer willing to do that. It's not much more
complex than the CodeEditor extension.

The script you linked is nice without extra frills. Thank you. (WikEd
gadget also highlights wiki markup, but it breaks some other things. It
is
available on all Wikimedia projects.)
I would ideally like to see the markup highlight functionality in the
core of MediaWiki some day, which may or may not have been considered
before.
