Sharon,
One way to generate another barcode that is associated with a patient would be
to create a wristband through NPR. In NPR, one could copy the original NPR
label for writbands and indicate an additional character to print at the end of
the barcode. You may also have to program your barcode reader to recognize this
additional character as well.

One way to prevent users from scanning a patient identifier found on
other documents is to create a unique barcode identifier just for
patient wristbands (one with an additional alpha numeric character, for
example). This unique barcode identifier would be printed upon admission
and should then be made available for re-printing only by certain
individuals, say house supervisors. By creating this unique identifier
and then restricting re-printing access by certain individuals, you will
be able to eliminate the shortcuts users create in overriding the 5 R's.

Hi,
If you already have policies in place for scanning patient wristbands
for point of care testing or medication administration, how are you
making sure users are actually scanning the wristbands? We would like
to prevent users from scanning a barcode found on some paper
documentation rather actually using the wristbands.
We're preparing for BMV but are already scanning for point of care, with
some users finding ways to get around scanning wristbands.
