What about using the camera button in "half way" (focus) mode? If you want to press the camera button completely (to start the camera app), switching to the home screen shouldn't really matter, and if you want to go to the home screen, you just press the camera button a bit. It works fine for the Nitdroid project. The "accidental activation" rate should be similar to the proximity sensor.
