We've always skipped .gitignore files, but not folders. That's only in
3.11.x.

You need to regenerate your gsettings schema. If you're running meld from a
checkout, just rm data/gschemas.compiled and Meld will recreate it, or you
can manually run `glib-compile-schemas data/`. If you've installed it then
it should have run this command in your global gsettings folder anyway.
