Research
Galloway Friends:
Yes, this information may be possible soon. That is why I took Mark Stayton
to lunch in Larime 2.5 years ago. It won't be documented with out funding a
Galloway study.
Both Mark Stayton and Dr. Tim Holt are doing a "Brisket Disease Update" as
an speaking event at the 2007 NWSS. Doug Hixon whom judged the Galloway Show
in 2005 is on staff with the University of WY and obviously has contacts with
the NWSS helped assemble the speaking engagement after I made a request for
them to do a presentation as part of the "Party in the Pen 2006" that was
hosted by the Rocky Mountain Galloways and the DD Ranch Galloways. This event
would be an Ideal Time to make a big splash regarding Galloway resistance. I
know there are at least 50 animals in CO that meet Dr. Holts requirement for
the PAP testing (the only test available today). Can we get funding for that
study of 50 animals at $15 per head from the AGBA to substantiate a breed
claim?
As many of you are aware, in lieu of Mark Stayton and Dr. Holt we had
speakers we had Stuart Dykstra & Frank McMurray speaking of their
personal success stories using Galloways at Altitude to beat Brisket Disease.
Also present was a speaker from Bovigen who answered questions and handed out
necessary information regarding Tenderness Testing. Another presence was Eric
Mathias from Bob Mullendore's "Cattle Wise" business. He shared the internet
business and on line auction functions of that business. Kevin Fulton was also
scheduled but was unable to attend as his nanny had a death of a very close
friend and was unable to take care of his children. Food and beverages were
enjoyed by all.
Once all the dates are set for the 2007. The Party in the Pen will be
scheduled again in 2007. Hope to see you there.

Galloway Friends:
Attached is a letter received by Kit
Smith from Dr. Mark Stayton at the University of Wyoming concerning ongoing
research to identify genetic markers of brisket disease. Good work,
Kit!
We have also been in communication with
Dr. Tim Holt at the University of Colorado concerning his very similar
research.
Soon it seems that genetic research
will document the Galloway resistance to brisket disease
a/k/a pulmonary hypertensive heart disease a/k/a high mountain
disease.
Regards,
Steve Castner
