Michael,
With the six lights restriction for PRC3/club and a good few other categories there were a few different schools of thought about what was best for lighting on the 510 in the forest. I preferred to have 4 cibie oscar drivers (2 spots and 2 floods mounted high/low on a bar in a pair each side) simply because that's what i was convinced to buy ($$$) in 1972 for the 1200 which was my first serious dirt car and it only had 2 original head lights. When I progressed to a 510, I originally used aircraft landers as inner high beams without the bar on the street, but these couldn't handle the vibes, also they were supposed to be illegal if used as fitted lighting for the street (so we were always told) although i never got knocked back for them at rego.

I then progressed to cibie inserts for all four headlights (2x 80/100w and 2 x 100w) and most of the time just by disabling the inners for dirt work was the accepted practice with 4 x oscars on the bar, the other option was to remove the inner inserts for competition but i can only recall having to do this once at the Alpine event around Wang/Mt Beauty in Victoria (fussy sobs). The other well used system was to have only 2 super oscars on the bar mounted high which i have been behind and there OK too, you can see for miles but the spread is not any where as good as the spot/flood oscar combos (imho) plus if you lost one (rare) you loose a lot more light. We wired the inserts the well proven way for the street (Fergy7 followed the wiring diagram and  has done it on his resto recently); it was simple to disable the inners and activate the oscars as we fitted a dual pole switch on the sense wire from the dip switch and the second bank of relays were alive - pretty simple and reliable system.

As for alternators, i saw a few set-ups years ago that were quite innovative, one that comes to mind was on a "083" works backed (FIA Group G) 610 SSS  (driver Warwick ???? i had the pleasure of some very scary rides with him) that had 2 x 55 amp Bosch alternators. The second alternator bracket was mounted to the block using the a/cond holes on the passenger side and the alt run off an a/c pulley and adjuster - I don't know whether it's legal these days but they reckoned it worked well.

regards
Terry

Terry,

Thanks for that.I had an original 55Amp that had been rewound to about 100Amp.Great power but reliability was a big problem.

As far as the lights, I have to be careful as I can only fit an extra pair. The rules for (as I understand the CAMS manual) for PRC3 is that a maximum of 6 forward facing lights is allowed. What I am trying to do is get some spotlights to replace the high beam and fit a set of floods.

Talk about no respect, I got woken up this morning by a strange noise and my security light on.I went out to check and here was a guy pulling on one of the front wheels. After the obligatory abuse as in Excuse me sir, but may I assist you? (Thats how I remember it anyway).I just wanted to see how well the wheels were secured. Was the reply.Needless to say he took off.Like you said, no respect.

cheers
