Lifting out is the easy part, putting it back in is a little harder. My
friend and myself have lifted one out. What you have to do is put a heavy
duty rag over the front of the car. Then sit on the guards and lift the
engine up onto the front(where the bonnet lock is). Balance it there for a
while whilst you get your breath back. One at a time get out of the car.
Go and have a drink. Come back and lift the engine down ground. Its not
the easiest way but it can be done. This is how I got my first dato engine
out. Also I left the head on, removed the inlet manifold and used the
exhaust manifold as a handle. On the other side I think he used the starter
motor hole and the oil filter.
I agree with Chris I wouldn't do it again:)

dave, good question, and I wish that I asked it before I attempted it on the
weekend. trying to save the $55 for the engine crane hire will cost me
about $200 in physio and doctor bills, and that wheelchair won't be too
cheap either - even after I get the 'newly disabled' assistance from the
government! (well maybe this isn't quite true, but I do have a sore back
STILL!!) Me and a mate pulled it out with a stop sign bar across the engine
bay ( an end on one shoulder and a chain to the manifold bolts from the
centre of the pole). It was hard work, especially when we couldn't get high
enough to get it over the body even when we were standing on blocks (we just
stood there going DAD DAD DAD until he came out and helped us get it over!.
once out, we hoisted the new engine with a rope over an I beam in my friends
garage, tied onto the back of his HZ holden (I knew V8's were good for
something!!) He didn't even have to start it, just rolled it down the hill
in his driveway! we then lowered it with just the rope (even this is pretty
hard work), but we lowered it too far (it ended up sitting on the X-member,
so we had to hoist it up and try again. After months/days/hours of
jiggling, we finally got it (I'm sure it still isn't in properly), and am
yet to start it up.
Well there is the way NOT TO DO IT!!!!!
The way to do it is to go to a main and buisy street corner in your worst
clothes and beg for money untill you get the 50 bucks for the crane. Just
my 5 cents (including GST)
