Hi  Paul, Yes use a mig welder, gas if you can get your hands on one but a gasless will do the job as well. And weld every 5cm with a beed of 3cm.  Make sure you are getting good and even penetration.  And really clean the areas use are going to weld.  I clean it and then mark it with white out.  Practise first on some crap metal which is the same or simliar size you are going to weld, DON'T PRACTISE ON THE CAR!!- very important!  And wear leather gloves and overalls cos it fucking hurts when metal hits your skin!!!!  I did my underneath of my car in 35C weather lying on my back wearing all the protective stuff and still got burnt so plan what you are going to weld!!!!
