Cameron,
A strut brace is not illegal, in fact they are still optional dealer extra's
for most makes that have McPherson struts on the road today and of course
there are aftermarket approved versions as well. PN for the 510 Datsun 1600
is 99996-5105A, prolly not still available in Australia from Nissan but you
can get the lhd version still in the USA, what's the difference - don't
know.
A word on police testing of vehicles on the street. They can only issue
canaries for a certain variety of offences, eg tyres, wheels, lights, fluid
leaks, smoke, noise and some illegal suspension mods, (eg lowering blocks
I've got a funny story about a young cop under my car for 5 minutes one
night looking for my lowering blocks) - laugh or what but he's only doing
his job right and you've gotta laugh it off, they go for mainly obvious
stuff and they can't do anything under bonnet other than check VIN & engine
number, as they are not qualified testers. If they issue a canary for a
strut bar then it's a hassle but not the end of the world, just go to the
RTA or similar authority in your state/territory and get it checked out. If
it's out of line and not a fair cop then they can fill in a form that
cancels the canary and you're away with everything intact.
This is well and good, but the worst thing you can do is ague with the cop
on the street - you just are wasting your time doing it and if he really
gets pissed off with you and if he's the particular type you come across
occasionally he'll remember you and do it all again every time he sees you
for the next 12 months - I've done it both ways and I know I'm right about
this. Take the sticker, if it's broke then your done fairly and then you
have to fix it, if it's not get it killed by an authorised tester.
regards
Terry

Subject: brad hallett about strut bracing?
hello,
i dont want to seem rude or anything but can i ask you a question?...i
mate of mine put a strut brace on his turbo corrolla and he was pulled over
and got a ticket thingy for having the strut brace on and was told to take
it off..... and while i was down the coast last night the police came to the
"car park" and was inspecting cars, i had my bonnet up, and two police
walked passed so i quikly shut the bonnet (as i have a strut brace) Is it
illegal to have a strut brace or not???
because i thought the police "sortof" would be endorcing strut bracing for
extra handling and safety???
