Dpends on the colour of the smoke.
 
If it's white then It's a fuel issue, if it's blue then it's a mechanical oil-related issue.
 
I'd say that you have just a rush of rich mixture and when you take your foot off it you are getting too much fuel...

Could somebody please offer a diagnosis on my L18?  It blows a decent puff of smoke during gearchanges if driven hard-ish (changing at 5000rpm).  Otherwise not smokey at all.  What is likely to be wrong and what would it cost to fix?
