Andrew,
Apply air at a regulated air pressure of 100 psi to a spark plug adaptor
with the piston on TDC on compression stroke. When pressurised the cylinder
will leak a small amount of air and the gauge pressure will drop below 100
Psi. An engine in good condition will have 2-3% leakdown, and will get down
to 15% leakdown on a very worn engine needing a rebuild. The plug adaptor
is made using an old spark plug and an air fitting. Valve leakage can be
heard in the exhaust pipe or inlet tract. Ring leakage causes crankcase
noises and air flow from breathers.
Cheers
Feral Errol

errol,
sorry for my ignorance, but could you please describe the process of a
leakdown test, is it DIY?!
thanks
