Do you have a locked diff, if you havent done already check the stub axles ie, put the old girl in the air grab the half shaft and see if it spins, your symptoms sound familiar.

It shouldn't be too hard to find the problem, jack the rear up both sides on the body points just in front of the rear wheels and have a look see under there. I'd be interested to know what you find as it helps all of us to keep an eye on stress points in our cars.

yeah that's the reason I was thinking back end troubles myself....because under brakes makes little to no difference
I know it probably sounds stupid but I swear it feels like the entire diff has some kind of tortional (spelling?) twist
