Andrew,
I think low oil and a bit of oil surge getting air into the head oil feed is
the most likely cause. As the oil supply bleed back up the noise would then
disappear.

The CA lifters are prone to clogging with dirty oil. Both the CA's and SR's
should be changed religiously at 5000 km's and I recommend changing the
filter at that time as well.
If you want an option to the hydraulic lifters, you can use RB26DETT "GTR"
solid lifters and valve springs. This give you more revs at the top end but
you will have to get flat tappet cams done as used in the V-spec R34 GTR's.

Cheers
Feral Errol

Subject: CA18 engine woes-lifters

After taking My car for a rather hard drive last night (been off road for a
few weeks) A rather bad engine rattle started :( was only running 14psi but
through some pretty quick tight corners and a bit of air time though a
causeway after this :) hehe anyway in with the clutch and coast down road
and
give it a little rev sounds like something in top end has let go so I pull
over let it idle it goes away!! I presume it was lifter or simaller Needs an
oil change anyway . I went to nissan today just to see what the lifters are
worth try $1400 a set trade !!!! Jesus I hope it aint too bad seems to be
running smooth and although oil was a bit dark and a little low I cant seem
to figure what It migth have been maybe a bit of oil surge what you guys
think??? I hate things that come and go at least if it stays I know it has
to
be fixed. I dont want to go out and give it heaps incase it causes more
damage.
Andrew
