The Datto has a wider range of driveline options that bolt in or can be
fitted with relative ease. The Datto independent rear suspension is bullet
proof, provides good handling and allows a great variety of very tough diffs
(R180 or R 200) to be installed. These will handle any power likely to be
bolted up front, reliably. They come from many later model Nissans even up
to the current crop of Silvias/Zeds. Strong gearboxes abound in five, and
just recently, six speeds from the S15 200SX Turbo.

Ten grand should just get you a beautiful bodied FJ/SR20 turbo powered
machine with fully sorted handling and braking with RWC. Don't go
overboard about getting an early Japanese body, they are preferable, but
there are still more good Aussi built ones around and many have the
performance gear you are looking for. Dont overlook an original L series
engined car. These go hard and long without the higher costs of turbo cars,
although some people pay up to 10 grand for a beautifully built bullet proof
L series engine. Generally speaking an Lseries engine can be built for road
or competition use at a much more reasonable cost than many other engines -
Datto parts are pretty cheap compared to most jap bits. Reliability, easy
parts replaceability/interchangeability are the best words to describe a
Datsun 1600. If you keep the body in good nick you will be able to keep the
car going mechanically for 20 or more years with minimal maintenance -
depending on your driving style.

Look for body condition first, original panels are preferred, no rear
flaired arches, well fitted mechanical bits next. Try to avoid ex rally
cars, they have generally had a hard life and are likely to have body
repairs. Again this is not always the case - there is one Datsun 1600 rally
car I know of that I would love to own. Interior is optional as you may
want to upgrade or restore.

All that said, I wouldn't sell the Sillycar if its a good one. These are
also a Jap classic and with a 18RGTEU or a 2TG fitted, go very well.
