Thomas, My 1600 (with FJ20) does the same thing in regards to pressurising the Radiator. I am using a pulsar radiator but it still does it. I thought the same thing as you, so I pulled the engine out and put in another FJ - same problem. Anyway I am now rebuilding the original motor - head gasket looked fine (sound familiar). The head is going for a service/upgrade this weekend, so when I get it all back together I will let you know if it fixed the problem.
In the mean time, has any one else out there overcome this problem?
